Ivanovic said Tuesday that she will undergo toe surgery and is also plagued by a wrist injury.
"Unfortunately, due to my recurring wrist injury, I have been advised by my doctor to take some time off the court in order to recover and regain my full strength," Ivanovic said via Twitter.
"I have also been delaying surgery on my toe, which I broke at the Australian Open in January last year, and that is something that I will need to take care of in the upcoming weeks.
"As a result I am very sad to say that I will not be able to continue the season and play in Asia."
Ivanovic, who turns 29 in November, said she would not consider retirement after her first-round exit at the U.S. Open when unseeded Denisa Allertova easily handled her in straight sets. Ivanovic was seeded 29th.
The Serbian won the 2008 French Open but her career has been in steep decline over the past four years. She also suffered a first-round loss at this year's Wimbledon in addition to the poor U.S. Open showing.
