The Kansas City Chiefs placed Justin Houston on the physically unable to perform list on Tuesday and placed fellow linebacker Josh Mauga on injured reserve.

Houston, who must sit out the first six games this season, led the league with 22 sacks in 2014 before a knee injury limited him to just 11 contests the following year. The 27-yar-old finished the 2015 campaign with 30 tackles, 7.5 sacks and two interceptions.

Houston underwent knee surgery to repair his non-functioning ACL in February and is expected to meet with Dr. James Andrews during Kansas City's bye week in early October for further evaluation.

Mauga will miss the entire season after he sustained a labral tear in his hip in August. He will have surgery on Sept. 8.

The Chiefs also waived wide receiver Mitch Matthews on Tuesday, reducing the team's roster to 76 players. The limit is 75, but Kansas City received a roster exemption for safety Eric Berry, who reported to camp on Sunday.
