The St. Louis Cardinals placed right-handed pitcher Mike Leake on the 15-day disabled list Monday due to shingles.

The move is retroactive to Aug. 22. Leake missed his start on Saturday.

Leake, who worked seven scoreless innings in a 9-0 win at Philadelphia on Aug. 21, is 9-9 with a 4.56 ERA in 25 starts over 152 innings this season.

"We just kind of left him at home and we're not seeing great progress so he's just been wiped out," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said Saturday. "Obviously there is pain involved. Just trying to give him in the best possible opportunity to get better. It has been pretty slow in the healing process."

The Cardinals recalled left-handed reliever Dean Kiekhefer from Triple-A Memphis and he will join the team for Monday night's series opener in Milwaukee.

Kiekhefer, who is being recalled for a third time this season, has appeared in 15 games with St. Louis, with a 4.50 ERA over 14 innings.

At Memphis, the 27-year-old Kiekhefer has compiled a 6-1 record with a 2.08 ERA, two saves and six Holds in 29 games over 34 2/3 innings.
