Arizona Cardinals cornerback Mike Jenkins tore his ACL in Sunday night's third preseason game against the Houston Texans and was placed on injured reserve.

Jenkins suffered the injury in the first quarter and was carted off the field. He had an MRI on Monday after the team returned from Houston.

"It was a shame because he had a chance to be our starting corner and he was battling through the hand (injury)," head coach Bruce Arians said Monday of Jenkins. "(It) was another one of those non-contact injuries."

Jenkins, an eight-year veteran who played the last two seasons for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was signed by the Cardinals on July 19.

The 31-year-old Jenkins missed part of training camp with a broken bone in his right hand.

Jenkins entered the NFL as a first-round pick by Dallas in 2008 and spent his first five seasons with the Cowboys before playing one campaign for the Oakland Raiders in 2013. He has started 68 of 101 career regular-season games, with 267 tackles and 10 interceptions. Half of the interceptions came in 2009 when he was selected to the Pro Bowl.

Jenkins played in 14 games with five starts last season with the Bucs, finishing with 17 tackles and five passes defenses.

The Cardinals waived injured quarterback Jake Coker (knee) and also released the following players on Monday: Wide receivers Amir Carlisle and Franky Okafor, guard Jake Bernstein, tight end Gerald Christian, tackle Clay Debord, long snapper Daniel Dillon, defensive tackle Iosia Iosia, cornerbacks Asa Jackson and Shaun Prater, punter Garrett Swanson and safety Tyrequek Zimmerman.

Arizona must reduce its roster from 90 to 75 players by Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET and then to 53 by Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.
