Ryan Moore performing well through two rounds at Bethpage Black

Ryan Moore claimed a share of the clubhouse lead with 18-hole leaders Patrick Reed and Scotland's Martin Laird at 5 under after firing a 3-under-par 68 Friday morning at The Barclays at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y.

The world No. 50 was 4-under on his first nine holes with four birdies before a bogey on No. 11. Moore briefly held solo first at 6-under after birdieing No. 14, but bogeyed No. 17 to drop back into a tie for the lead.

Moore is a once decorated amateur who won the 2004 NCAA Individual Championship and the 2005 Ben Hogan Award while at UNLV before claiming the 2004 U.S. Amateur. The 33-year-old has five victories on the PGA Tour.

His most recent win came 12 days ago at the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill., besting Ben Martin by two strokes. Moore ranks 23rd in the FedExCup standings, but would rise to sixth place with a victory at Bethpage Black.

World No. 3 Jordan Spieth recovered from an opening double bogey with seven straight pars before an eagle, four birdies and five pars to complete a second-round 67. He was tied for fourth after opening with a 71.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, the world No. 5, played bogey free with four birdies through 14 holes before back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16. He carded a 69 to rise into the top 20 after an even-par 71 on Thursday.

Jason Kokrak and Jamie Lovemark had the low morning rounds of 66. Harold Varner III, Ricky Barnes and Harris English matched Spieth's 67 while Jim Herman and Billy Hurley II notched 68's to put themselves in contention.

Reed and Laird teed off at 12:55 p.m. ET and 1:17, respectively.
