Washington Redskins running back Matt Jones will miss the remainder of the preseason with a left shoulder injury.

Jones sustained a separated shoulder in the first quarter of Friday's preseason game versus the New York Jets and did not return. The 23-year-old rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns during his rookie season in 2015 and was expected to handle a larger workload with Albert Morris signing with the Dallas Cowboys in the offseason.

Coach Jay Gruden told reporters that he has "high hopes" that Jones will be ready for the regular-season opener against Pittsburgh on Sept. 12.

Undrafted rookie Robert Kelley replaced Jones as the team's top back versus the Jets and could be in line to start on Friday against Buffalo (7:30 p.m. ET). Kelley has rushed 10 times for 48 yards in the preseason.

Third-year player Chris Thompson, second-year player Mack Brown and rookie Keith Marshall are also listed in the backfield.
