Rio Roundup: DeAndre Jordan leads Team USA to Gold Medal match

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Spaniards swiped and surged in efforts to penetrate the United States defense Friday, but DeAndre Jordan was a concrete force.

Jordan ripped down 16 rebounds and had four blocks to lead Team USA's men's basketball team into the Gold Medal match after its 82-76 win against Spain.

Team USA faces Serbia in the gold medal game at 2:45 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21. Klay Thompson scored 22 points in the semifinal win, making 4-of-8 3-point attempts. Jordan had nine points, while Kevin Durant chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds for the Americans. Pau Gasol scored 23 points for Spain in the loss.

RUNDOWN IN RIO

Usain Bolt anchored Jamaica's gold-medal winning 4x100-meter winning squad. The medal tied American legend Carl Lewis and Paavo Nurmi for the most in Olympic track and field history. Jamaica ran a 37.27 to win the top prize. Japan won a silver medal and Canada won a bronze medal in the event. Team USA was disqualified from the event because of a baton mishap when it passed the baton outside the zone. The Americans originally had pocketed a bronze medal in the event.

The United States women's 4x100-meter relay team won a gold medal by beating Jamaica and Great Britain. The Americans won with a time of 41.01.

Steven Lopez lost his bronze medal match in men's 80-kg taekwondo to Tunisia's Oussama Oueslati.

Italy knocked off the United States men's volleyball team 3-2 in a semifinal matchup.

Alise Post won a silver medal in the women's cycling BMX final at the Olympic BMX Centre. Colombia's Mariana Pajon won a gold medal in the event, while Venezuela's Stefany Hernandez won a bronze medal.

Sandi Morris won a bronze medal in the women's pole vault final. Greece's Ekaterini Stefanidi won a gold medal in the event while New Zealand's Eliza McCartney won a bronze medal.

In the men's cycling BMX final, Connor Fields took home the gold medal for Team USA. The Netherlands' Jelle Van Gorkom won a silver medal and Colombia's Carlos Alberto Ramirez Yepes won a bronze medal in the event.

The United States found revenge against the Italians when it defeated Italy 12-5 in the women's gold medal water polo match.

Claressa Maria Shields lost her bronze medal semifinal match to Kazakhstan's Dariga Shakimova in women's middle weight 69-75 kg boxing.

On Saturday, the United States women face Spain in the gold medal basketball final.
