The ex-wife of Josh Brown claims that the New York Giants kicker has been physically violent with her on more than 20 occasions over the past several years.

Brown was suspended for the first regular-season game by the NFL on Wednesday for a violation of the league's personal conduct policy. He admitted to reporters the following day that the suspension was due to a 2015 incident in which he was arrested in Washington state on a domestic assault charge.

Molly Brown, who told police she has consistently received death threats over the years, called police in May 2015 after she said Josh Brown pushed her into a large mirror, threw her on the floor, jumped on her and pinned her face to the carpet with his forearm pressing into the back of his neck.

The charge was later dropped due to insufficient evidence.

Josh Brown said he informed the Giants of his arrest on the day it occurred.

It was a "moment that happened over a year ago," Josh Brown said one day after his suspension. "While I'm not OK with the decision, I have to respect it. So I look forward to a 15-game season and moving forward with my teammates."

Brown will miss the Sept. 11 game against the Dallas Cowboys. He had appealed the discipline and lost before the NFL announced it.

First-year coach Ben McAdoo backed his kicker in a short statement.

"We have been supportive of Josh and will continue to be, but we accept the league's decision," McAdoo said.

Brown made 30 of 32 field goals last season and made the Pro Bowl for the first time. The Giants signed the 37-year-old to a two-year, $4 million extension this past offseason.

Meanwhile, Molly Brown said in documents obtained by ESPN that police have been called to their residences in Washington, St. Louis and New Jersey over the years due to incidents. She said she had a protective order against her then-husband in 2013 but it was later dropped due to strides made in counseling.

Molly Brown claims the Giants are also aware of an incident that happened at their resident in Hoboken, N.J. She said the apartment owners were trying to blackmail the couple and the Giants' attorneys "basically did what they needed to do to make the guy go away."

Josh Brown's troubles go back to 2001 when he was a junior at Nebraska and was found guilty of misdemeanor assault. In that case, he harassed an ex-girlfriend and waited for her to come home on a date. He fought the man and tossed his ex-girlfriend to the ground when she attempted to intervene.
