Rio Roundup: USA ups medal count to 74, Allyson Felix unseated in 400m

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Bahamian sprinter Shaunae Miller dove over the finish line Monday night to edge United States track legend Allyson Felix in the 400-meter final at the Summer Games.

Miller's 49.44 was just enough to beat Felix's 49.51. Jamaica's Shericka Jackson earned a bronze medal with a time of 49.85.

Felix fell behind the field, but looked to have paced herself perfectly for the backstretch. Miller and Felix were neck-and-neck nearing the finish line, but Miller pulled her momentum forward enough to make a literal leap for gold.

The silver medal means seven career Olympic medals for Felix. She won a silver medal in the 200-meter run at the 2004 Olympics. She won another silver in that same event in the 2008 Beijing Games. Felix finally won the gold at the 2012 London Olympics. She also has three gold medals from relay events.

Monday's silver medal made Felix the most decorated American woman in Olympic track history.

Team USA now has 74 total medals, with 26 gold, 23 silver, and 25 bronze medals. China has 46 total medals and Great Britain has 41 medals. Great Britain has 16 gold medals compared to China's 15 gold medals.

RUNDOWN IN RIO Sanne Wevers won the first gymnastics Olympic medal ever for the Netherlands with a score of 15.466. She edged the United States combo of Laurie Hernandez and Simone Biles for the top prize in the women's balance beam final. Hernandez scored a 15.333, while Biles submitted an uncharacteristic 14.733.

Emma Coburn finished in third place in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase final. Coburn earned her bronze medal behind Bahrain's Ruth Jebet and Kenya's Hyvin Kiyeng Jepkemoi, who won gold and silver medals, respectively. The United States men's volleyball team beat Mexico 3-0 in Pool A preliminary play.

American Benjamin Errol Provisor fell to Uzbekistan's Rustam Assakalov in the men's wrestling 85 kg 1/8 final. Team USA's Robert Timothy David Smith lost to Azerbaijan's Sabah Shariati in the men's wrestling 130 kg 1/8 final.

Team USA's men's beach volleyball duo of Nicholas Lucena and Philip Dalhausser fell to Brazil's Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt 2-1 in a quarterfinal contest.

Mikaela Joslin Mayer lost to Russia's Anastasiia Beliakova in a women's light boxing 57-60 kg quarterfinal.

Kenya's David Lekuta Rudisha beat Alrgeria's Taoufik Makhloufi and American Clayton Murphy for a gold medal in the men's 800-meter final on the Rio track. Rudisha won gold with a time of 1:42.15. Murphy won a bronze medal with a 1:42.93.

Team USA's women's basketball squad plays Japan in a quarterfinal bout at 6:45 p.m. Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross battle Brazil's Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas De Freitas at midnight in a women's beach volleyball semifinal.
