The New Orleans Saints decided to end their experiment with Hakeem Nicks by releasing the veteran wide receiver on Monday.

Long snapper Chris Highland was signed to fill the roster spot of Nicks, who had worked out with the club in May before inking a contract on July 27.

Nicks was facing an uphill battle to join New Orleans, which also had wide receivers Brandin Cooks, Willie Snead, rookie Michael Thomas and Brandon Coleman on the roster.

The 28-year-old Nicks had just seven catches for 54 yards in six games with the New York Giants last season, a far cry from the career high 79-reception, 11-touchdown performance he posted with the club in 2010. He also had a personal-best 1,192 receiving yards the following season.

Nicks had 356 receptions for 5,081 yards and 31 touchdowns with New York and Indianapolis since being selected with the 29th overall pick of the 2009 draft.
