St. Louis Cardinals activate INF Matt Carpenter from DL

St. Louis Cardinals All-Star infielder Matt Carpenter was activated prior to Friday's game against the Atlanta Braves, the team announced.

Carpenter had been on the disabled list since July 7 because right oblique injury. He missed 24 games and appeared in four games with Double-A Springfield during an injury rehabilitation.

Carpenter was named to his third National League All-Star team last month, but he was unable to participate in it because of his injury. He is batting .298 with a .420 on-base percentage and 14 homers in 78 games for the Cardinals this season.

This season Carpenter has made 49 starts at third base, 24 at second base and three at first base.

To make room on the roster for Carpenter, the Cardinals optioned left-handed pitcher Dean Kiekhefer to Triple-A Memphis.
