The New Orleans Saints activated cornerback Keenan Lewis from the physically unable to perform list on Wednesday and signed three players to contracts.

Lewis, who was plagued by hip, sports hernia and knee injuries last year, underwent three surgeries in the offseason and passed his physical to return from the PUP list. The 30-year-old took park in a few 7-on-7 drills during Wednesday's practice.

"Yeah, we'll be smart," coach Sean Payton told the Times-Picayune on how the team will limit Lewis. "Any time we bring a player who's coming off of an injury we've got to be smart about how many reps they get in the course of practice and begin to expand that as the weeks go on."

The Saints also signed defensive end Matt Shaughnessy, safety Jamal Golden and guard Jordan Walsh to deals.

Shaughnessy, who worked out for the Saints in May, recorded 220 tackles, 18.5 sacks and four fumble recoveries in 75 games with Oakland and Arizona.

Golden collected 169 tackles and eight interceptions during his five-year career at Georgia Tech.

Walsh made 37 starts in his four seasons with Iowa.
