NEW YORK -- Starlin Castro's sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning lifted the New York Yankees to a 6-5 win over the New York Mets on Monday night in the first Subway Series game of the season at Citi Field.

The Yankees (53-52) snapped a four-game losing streak by winning a back-and-forth contest that featured two ties and three lead changes. The Mets (54-51) have lost six of eight on their current homestand.

Adam Warren (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings. Dellin Betances notched his first save after navigating his way out of a first-and-third, one-out jam in the bottom of the 10th.

Seth Lugo (0-1) took the loss.

Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius hit a game-tying, two-run single in the eighth inning off Addison Reed.

Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury had two hits apiece for the Yankees, while Wilmer Flores, Travis d'Arnaud, James Loney and Matt Reynolds each collected two hits for the Mets.

The wild game capped a frantic day in which both teams were active, albeit with differing motives, in the hours before the 4 p.m. EDT trading deadline.

The Yankees, who began the day 5 1/2 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the race for the American League's second wild card, continued their first rebuilding project in a generation by dealing outfielder/designated hitter Carlos Beltran to the Texas Rangers for three prospects and sending right-handed Ivan Nova to the Pittsburgh Pirates for two players to be named.

The Mets, who entered Monday 2 1/2 games behind the Miami Marlins in the race for the National League's second wild card, continued to play for this season while adding someone who can help next year. They traded a pair of prospects to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for outfielder Jay Bruce, who is signed through 2017. They also dealt left-hander Antonio Bastardo to the Pirates for left-hander Jonathon Niese, who spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Mets.

Flores hit a solo homer in the second to give the Mets a 1-0 lead before the Ellsbury raced home on a wild pitch in the fourth.

The game began to turn hectic in the fifth, when the Yankees took a 3-2 lead on back-to-back RBI doubles by Gardner and Ellsbury. The Mets went up 5-3 in the sixth, when rookie shortstop Reynolds hit a three-run homer.

Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out five over 5 2/3 innings. Mets right-hander Logan Verrett gave up three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out two over five innings.

NOTES: Neither OF Jay Bruce, acquired from Cincinnati, nor LHP Jonathon Niese, acquired from Pittsburgh, arrived in time to be added to the Mets' 25-man roster Monday. To replace traded LHP Antonio Bastardo on the roster, the Mets recalled INF Matt Reynolds from Triple-A Las Vegas. Reynolds is insurance for SS Asdrubal Cabrera, who sustained a left patellar tendon injury Sunday. ... To replace OF Carlos Beltran (traded to Texas), RHP Ivan Nova (Pittsburgh) and LHP Andrew Miller (Cleveland), the Yankees added RHP Tyler Clippard, whom they acquired from Arizona on Sunday, to the 25-man roster while recalling OF Ben Gamel and RHP Nick Goody from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees played a man down Sunday following Miller's trade to the Indians.
