The surgery will be the second fusion procedure in 27 months for Fielder. His 2014 season ended with neck surgery.
Fielder recently was diagnosed with a herniated disk, which might help explain his dismal .212 batting average. He has only eight home runs and 44 RBIs in 89 games.
After his 2014 surgery, Fielder bounced back with an All-Star performance in 2015 when he hit .305 with 23 homers and 98 RBIs.
He is scheduled to have surgery later this week.
