Mark Cavendish won a sprint to the finish on Thursday to win the sixth stage of the Tour de France, his 29th career stage victory at the event. Cavendish, from Great Britain, overtook German Marcel Kittle down the stretch of the 118-mile stage that ended in Montauban, France and edged him by half a wheel.

It marks Cavendish's third stage win of this tour. Cavendish's 29 stage wins are second all-time behind Eddy Merckx (34).
"The history of the Tour de France shows that just one stage win can make a rider's career," Cavendish said afterward. "I like to give the race the respect it deserves and not think about the numbers. I'm just looking to win more, to win as much as possible."
Greg van Avermaet remains in first place with the yellow jersey. The Belgian has a lead of 5 minutes, 11 seconds over second-place Julian Alaphilippe of France.
"It will be hard but I will try," van Avermaet said of his hopes of still owning the jersey after the next stage. "I will fight for it every minute."
