Robbie Keane, back from Euros, scores in L.A.'s win

Robbie Keane was quick to make his presence felt with the Los Angeles Galaxy on Monday.

The 35-year-old forward scored in his return from representing Ireland at Euro 2016 as Los Angeles posted a 2-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Monday in Carson, Calif.

Jeff Larentowicz also tallied and fellow midfielder Steven Gerrard notched two assists for the Galaxy (6-3-8), who tasted victory for the first time since Keane tallied twice in a 4-2 triumph over New England on May 8.

Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Rowe overcame a few anxious moments in the first half and finished with four saves as Los Angeles improved to 5-0-4 at StubHub Center.

David Ousted turned aside three shots for the Whitecaps (7-8-3), who were also shut out in their previous meeting with Los Angeles. The sides played to a scoreless draw at BC Place on April 2.

Keane recorded his fifth goal in seven MLS games to open the scoring in the 12th minute. The veteran forward accepted a long feed from Gerrard and dribbled around Vancouver defender Kendall Waston at the top of the box before unleashing a shot that curled into the top right corner of the net.

The Whitecaps nearly netted the equalizer in the 37th minute, as forward Nicolas Mezquida's redirection of defender Jordan Smith's cross sailed just wide of the goal. Ousted kept the deficit at one seven minutes later by extending his body near the right post to deny a low-driving blast from Gerrard.

Ousted was not as fortunate in the 47th minute, however, as Larentowicz headed home a corner kick to double the Galaxy's advantage. The tally was Larentowicz's first of the season, and the assist by Gerrard was his team-high seventh.

The match turned chippy in the 74th minute as Los Angeles' Nigel de Jong received a red card for a serious foul on Blas Perez. Cooler heads prevailed, and the Galaxy went on to snap their seven-game winless streak (0-2-5).

Forward Kekuta Manneh was left out of the lineup due to a "coach's decision," a Whitecaps official told the Vancouver Province. The 21-year-old Gambian has scored five goals in 16 MLS games this season, one shy of Pedro Morales' team-leading total.
