Monica Puig is surprise semifinalist at Eastbourne

Qualifier Monica Puig outlasted France's Kristina Mladenovic in a marathon match on Thursday to reach the semifinals of the Eastbourne International in England.

Puig, from Puerto Rico, posted a 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3 victory over Mladenovic in a match that took two hours, 43 minutes.

Puig is the first qualifier to reach the semifinals at Eastbourne since American Jamie Hampton in 2013.

Puig survived 23 break points and Mladenovic faced 13.

Rain prevented the completion of the other three quarterfinal matches. Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland held a 6-4, 2-0 lead over Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova before the match was postponed.

Nottingham Open

Eighth-seeded Gilles Muller of Luxembourg knocked off fourth-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals of the Nottingham Open at Nottingham, England.

Muller next faces second-seeded Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay. Cuevas had to battle to get past ninth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8).

Seventh-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy defeated Israel's Dudi Sela 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
