IRVING, Tex. -- Guard Ron Leary and linebacker Rolando McClain reported to the Dallas Cowboys' mandatory minicamp, joining their teammates for the first time this offseason.

Both boycotted the offseason program and OTAs. Leary wants to be traded and McClain stayed away spending time with his kids.

"Like we've talked about with Rolando, he had a family situation he was working through," head coach Jason Garrett said. "The offseason program in the NFL is voluntary. There are three mandatory days this minicamp. So again, we were in conversation with him about that situation that he was working through."

Leary requested a trade from the Cowboys, signing his restricted free-agent tender of $2.553 million before the draft to facilitate that. However, the Cowboys insist they will have to receive fair market value in return to trade Leary.

The Cowboys have McClain and Leary working on the side during minicamp.

"We're going to get them acclimated back to playing football in a more deliberate fashion than the rest of the group," Garrett said.

Both players would have been fined more than $76,000 for missing minicamp.

--Defensive end Benson Mayowa had arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday and will be out four to six weeks. He should be back in time for the start of training camp.

But it is a setback for a Cowboys team already hurting at defensive end with projected starters DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory already suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Head coach Jason Garrett said Mayowa has done an excellent job so far in getting acclimated to the team and has made a lot of progress.

Mayowa had just two sacks in 28 games for the Raiders, but the Cowboys are betting on the come, hoping that he could have a breakout season in Dallas. It's one reason they signed him to a three-year offer sheet worth $8.25 million, including $4 million in the first year.

Lawrence is not only dealing with the suspension to start the season, but he is recovering from back surgery that is keeping him out of workouts.

Garrett acknowledged the issues at defensive end, but remains confident the Cowboys will be fine. The Cowboys are practicing with Gregory and rookie fourth-round pick Charles Tapper at right end with Ryan Russell, Jack Crawford and David Irving at left end.

"I think we have created competitive situations on our defensive line," Garrett said. "A couple of these guys have been injured over the course of OTAs and have not been available to us. We are confident those guys will be back. We have a couple of situations where we are dealing with suspensions at the outset of the season. But we like the guys we have put together. We like the competition that is going on out there, guys competing for playing time. I think everyone is benefiting from that."
