The Pittsburgh Pirates placed catcher Francisco Cervelli on the 15-day disabled list with a broken hamate bone in his left hand a day after he and right-hander Gerrit Cole left Friday night's game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Cole was scheduled for an MRI exam on Saturday. The Pirates' No. 1 starter left in the third inning because of right triceps tightness.

The Pirates also acquired catcher Erik Kratz from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in exchange for cash considerations. Kratz is expected to arrive in Pittsburgh in time for Saturday night's game.

Cervelli, batting in the fourth, summoned a trainer after taking a big swing on the first pitch. He left because of left hand pain.

Cervelli underwent left hand surgery Saturday to remove a fractured hook of the hamate bone. He is estimated to return to full baseball activities in four to six weeks.

Cole allowed a single to Matt Carpenter to lead off the third and then summoned a trainer and manager Clint Hurdle to the mound. After a few minutes of consultation, Cole walked to the dugout.

Cole is 5-4 with a 2.77 ERA. Cervelli is batting .257 with no home runs and 21 RBIs.

To make room for Kratz on the 40-man roster, Triple-A Indianapolis right-hander Trey Haley was designated for assignment.

Kratz, 35, made his major-league debut with Pittsburgh in 2010. He has also played with the Philadelphia Phillies (2011-2013 and 2015), Toronto Blue Jays (2014), Kansas City Royals (2015) and Houston Astros (2016). He was acquired by the Angels in March.

Kratz played 15 games with the Astros this season before being designated for assignment on May 16. He was then signed by the Angels as a minor league free agent on May 27 and assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake, where he hit .231 with three doubles and seven RBI in 12 games.

To replace Cervelli on the roster, the Pirates recalled right-handed pitcher Rob Scahill from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Left-handed pitcher Kyle Lobstein was optined to Indianapolis to make room for Kratz on the 25-man roster.

Right-handed pitcher Arquimedes Caminero (left quad strain) was recalled from a rehab assignment with Indianapolis and reinstated from the 15-day disabled list. To make room for Caminero, infielder Cole Figueroa has been optioned to Indianapolis.
