Copa America roundup: Late goals carry Mexico past Uruguay

Two late goals carried Mexico to a 3-1 win over Uruguay in Glendale, Ariz., on Sunday in a Copa America Group C opener that ended with 10 men on the field for both teams.

Rafael Marquez snapped a 1-1 tie with a high, 12-foot shot inside the near post in the 85th minute. Hector Herrera padded Mexico's lead in the second minute of second-half stoppage time.

Mexico jumped on top in the fourth minute when Uruguay defender Alvaro Pereira scored an own goal. Just before halftime, Uruguay midfielder Matias Vecino was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

Mexico midfielder Andres Guardado got his second yellow in the 73rd minute, leaving both teams a player short. Moments later, Carlos Sanchez sent a free kick into the box, and Diego Godin's header evened the score for Uruguay.

Venezuela 1, Jamaica 0

Jamaica missed a chance to tie in the 49th minute when a shot by Michael Hector hit the post and also in the 70th minute when Venezuela goalkeeper Andre Blake made a diving save.

Jamaica played with 10 men on its side after midfielder Rodolph Austin was sent off in the 23rd minute when he drew a red card for a tackle on Venezuela's Tomas Rincon.

Jamaican defender Wes Morgan, who captained Leicester City to a stunning championship in England's Premier League this year, entered as a first-half sub after his team was down a goal and a man.
