BARCELONA, Spain, June 3 (UPI) -- Spanish motorcycle racer Luis Salom died Friday after crashing during practice at Barcelona's Montmelo racing circuit.
Salom, 24, participated in Grand Prix motorcycle racing's Moto2, the middle tier of the three-tiered classification system based on engine size. At the track to participate in Sunday's Catalan Grand Prix, he lost control of his vehicle after five laps of practice as it left Turn 11 and entered Turn 12, typically taken at about 100 mph.
Witnesses said he fell off the motorcycle, and then was struck by it, as he left the turn. He was taken by ambulance to Hospital General de Catalunya, where he underwent surgery but died of his injuries.
Salom, a resident of the Spanish island of Mallorca and member of the SAG racing team, was in his third year of competition in Moto2. He was second in the Moto3 championship series in 2012, prompting his promotion to Moto2.
After the accident, the remainder of Friday's practice session was canceled.
