New Orleans Pelicans rookie guard Bryce Dejean-Jones died from a gunshot wound to his abdomen, his agent told ESPN Saturday. He was 23.
The Dallas, Texas, County Coroner also confirmed Dejean-Jones' death to NBC Sports.
"Bryce overcame a lot of obstacles to get to this point in his career," said his agent, Scott Nichols. "He was a joy to be around, a talent just turning the corner in his career."
Dejean-Jones, who was undrafted, signed a three-year contract with the Pelicans in February after playing consecutive 10-day contracts. He averaged 5.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 19.9 minutes over 14 games (11 starts). His season ended when he had surgery for a broken right wrist.
Dejean-Jones played collegiately at USC, UNLV and Iowa State.
