The Memphis Grizzlies have interviewed Charlotte Hornets assistant Patrick Ewing for their head coach position. According to reports, the legendary Hall of Fame center met with the Grizzlies on Thursday.
Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace and team executives are spending the week in Chicago at the NBA Draft Combine and they are expected to interview other potential coaching candidates.
The Sacramento Kings also talked to Ewing before hiring Dave Joerger, who was fired last Saturday by the Grizzlies after three seasons as their head coach.
The 53-year-old Ewing has been an assistant for four teams over the past 13 seasons, including the past three seasons as an associate head coach for Charlotte.
Joerger was 147-99 in his first NBA head coaching job and took the Grizzlies to the playoffs in each of his three seasons. He was seeking permission from the Grizzlies to talk to other teams about their open positions and that led to his firing.
The Grizzlies are expected to consider San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Ettore Messina, who is now available to interview after the Spurs were eliminated from the playoffs Thursday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Spurs granted the Grizzlies permission on Saturday to interview Messina, who made a name in the international game by winning four Euroleague titles and twice being named coach of the year.
Former Indiana Pacers coach Frank Vogel also is available after the Pacers decided not to renew his contract.
