The Chicago Cubs activated catcher Miguel Montero from the disabled list and started Saturday's game against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates.

To make room for Montero on the 25-man roster, the club designated outfielder Ryan Kalish for assignment. Kalish is 2-for-7 with two runs driven in for the Cubs this season.

Montero was out with lower back tightness since April 25. In three rehab games with Triple-A Iowa, he went 2-for-10 over three games.

Heading into Saturday's contest, Montero is batting .208 with a home run and six RBIs in 48 at-bats.
