Jason Day extends his lead at The Players Championship

Jason Day had another good day at The Players Championship, extending his lead to three shots with a 5-under-par round through 14 holes on Friday in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

The Australian, who tied a course record with a 63 on Friday, was at 14 under before the round was suspended at 8 p.m. ET. The players still on the TPC Stadium course will return at 9:15 a.m. Saturday to complete the second round.

Shane Lowry finished with a 68 and was alone in second at 11-under 133 after completing 36 holes.

Day, ranked No. 1 in the world, birdied his final two holes before the suspension of play. He also had three birdies on the front nine and no bogeys for the second straight day.

Jonas Blixt shot 67 for the second day in a row and was tied for third at 10 under with Alex Cejka and Cameron Tringale.

Rory McIlroy made a big move up the leaderboard after an 8-under 64 left him at 8 under and in a tie with 2015 British Open champion Zach Johnson (69) and Daniel Berger, who had five holes to play in the second round.

Just ahead of that group at 9 under were Boo Weekley (69), Colt Knost (63), Francesco Molinari (69) and Jerry Kelly (68).

Knost tied the course record of 63 one day after Day also shot 63. Others sharing the record are Fred Couples (1992), Greg Norman (1994), Roberto Castro (2013) and Martin Kaymer (2014).

Approaching the final hole, Knost was at 10 under for the day and had a chance to break the record before three-putting for bogey.

"I was nervous over the last putt just because -- you know, so many great players have played this golf course and all that, and to be the first one and only one to shoot 10 under would have been really cool," Knost said.

McIlroy also flirted with the course record but bogeyed his final hole after he missed the green and two-putted.

"I was trying to get really sort of cute with it and I just hit it too easy," he said.

McIlroy started on the back nine and shot 7-under 29. He equaled his PGA Tour career best with 22 putts in the round.

"I'm frustrated," McIlroy said. "(My score) should have been a couple better. I'm disappointed, but there's still two more days to go. That's the nice thing. I'm in a good position heading into the weekend."

Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth were in danger of missing the cut at 1 under. Fowler finished with a 71 and Mickelson was 1 over for the day with two holes to play. Spieth is 1 under for the round with five holes left.
