First-rounder Josh Doctson, the No. 22 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, signed a four-year deal with the Washington Redskins.

Doctson was the top player available when the Redskins were on the clock, general manager Scot McCloughan said April 28 after the pick was made.

"Now you guys understand what I preach about: I'm sure none of you thought we'd pick a receiver, because we've got depth," McCloughan said. "But that was the best football player on the board."

The Redskins signed five other picks Monday: safety Su'a Cravens, defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis, quarterback Nate Sudfeld, linebacker Steven Daniels and running back Keith Marshall.

The 22nd overall pick in the 2015 draft, linebacker Bud Dupree, signed a four-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers worth $9.22 million. Doctson's deal will be in the same range and include a fifth-year team option.

Doctson was a "slam dunk" to McCloughan after a prolific college career in TCU's fast-paced spread offense, where he set school records in receiving yards (2,785) and receiving touchdowns (29) and finished second in TCU history with 180 career receptions. He had a 41-inch vertical at the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine and gives Washington at least one wide receiver over 6 feet tall.

Doctson caught 78 passes in 10 games last season before a wrist injury ended his college career.

There was some question before the draft whether Doctson was capable of becoming a No. 1 receiver in coach Jay Gruden's pro-style offense. That answer won't likely be available immediately, but with DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon one season away from free agency, the Redskins sounded confident Doctson, 6-2, 220 pounds, can eventually fill that type of role.

"He's got height," Gruden said. "He's got the mad leaping skills which are very appealing - especially in the red zone. He's another guy that's going to bring athleticism to this offense, and we're excited to have him."
