Longtime ESPN stalwart Mike Tirico will join NBC on July 1.

Tirico and NBC announced late in April that he would be leaving NBC, and on Monday his role at the Peacock Network became a bit clearer.

One of Tirico's chief roles at ESPN was being the play-by-play announcer for Monday Night Football. ESPN confirmed Monday that Sean McDonough will take Tirico's place at the Monday Night Football and will join Jon Gruden in the booth for the 2016 season.

Tirico will work on an array of high-profile events at NBC, including Sunday Night Football, NBC's new Thursday Night Football series, the Summer and Winter Olympics, select golf telecasts and other major events.

"I am thrilled to join this outstanding team," Tirico said. "For me [joining NBC] is a dream come true."

Tirico joins NBC after 26 years at ESPN/ABC (1991-2016), where he established himself as a pre-eminent broadcaster. Among the events he covered for ESPN were "Monday Night Football", The Masters, NBA, college football, college basketball, FIFA World Cup and the U.S. Open and Wimbledon.

McDonough is the chief beneficiary of Tirico's departure as he landed the Monday Night Football play-by-play role vacated by Tirico.

"This is a dream come true," McDonough said. "One of my favorite memories of my childhood was watching Monday Night Football with my Dad, who I know is smiling down on me today. I am humbled and deeply honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the most iconic franchise in the history of sports television."
