NFL Draft just around the corner for Jalen Ramsey

By Jeff Reynolds, The Sports Xchange

CHICAGO -- Skill set and versatility are reasons Jalen Ramsey could play safety or cornerback in the NFL.

Self-confidence indicates the Florida State defensive back is ready to be an NFL corner when his name is called, likely in the top five, in the 2016 draft on Thursday.

"You can call me cocky, you can call me arrogant, but I know what I am," he said. "I'm humble, I'm just confident in my abilities. I have no reason to not be confident. I play defensive back. You have to be confident playing defensive back. Period."

Ramsey, told he's the top player in the draft by at least one NFL team, is the No. 2 player on the NFLDraftScout.com board.

The San Diego Chargers discussed Ramsey at No. 3, general manager Tom Telesco said Tuesday. The Dallas Cowboys are leaning toward Ramsey at No. 4 if he's there, per intel gleaned by NFLDraftScout.com senior analyst Dane Brugler.

Though Ramsey's preference is to land with a team that will use him at cornerback, he said it not a big deal to him where he's selected.

"It doesn't matter how high I go. It doesn't matter if I go at three or 33 or wherever," Ramsey said. "I'll be happy regardless."

The Jacksonville Jaguars, Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns and Oakland Raiders could all do flips should Ramsey somehow fall to their picks at Nos. 5-9.

Ramsey has allowed himself to get excited about the prospect of checking Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant in practice, and it would be a mild upset if he winds up available after the fifth pick is turned in Thursday.

"He's one of the best receivers in the game and that's always been the guy who I wanted to go up against, whether it's in practice or the game," Ramsey said.

That's enough to make Jerry Jones smile -- or cringe -- come Thursday night.
