Quarterback Will Grier, who helped Florida get off to a 6-0 start in 2015 before being suspended by the NCAA, will transfer to West Virginia, the university announced Wednesday.
Grier will have to sit out the 2016 season as a transfer, but it is unclear when Grier will be eligible to play for the Mountaineers.
He was suspended for one year for using a performance-enhancing substance.
If Grier had stayed at Florida, he would not have been eligible until next season's Missouri game on Oct. 15. His 365-day suspension will be put on hold during his transfer year, and the clock on his suspension will restart in 2017, causing him to miss the first half of 2017.
Florida has planned to appeal his penalty in order to have him eligible for the start of the 2017 season, and the West Virginia MetroNews reported West Virginia plans to submit a waiver to have Grier reinstated for the entire 2017 season.
Last season, Grier completed 65 percent of his passes for 10 touchdowns and three interceptions.
He told the media he "took an over-the-counter supplement with something in it" that violated NCAA standards. Grier said he regretted not clearing the product with Florida's medical staff.
