Fired head coach Tom Coughlin is still waiting for the New York Giants to discuss the advisor role suggested when he was fired in January.

During an interview at a reunion radio show for "Mike and the Mad Dog" Coughlin said he's not counting on any role with the Giants. The team suggested he would remain in a limited capacity or advisor role.

"I haven't heard anything about that," Coughlin said. "I don't think I will be with them in any capacity this season."

Coughlin, 69, was head coach for 12 seasons and won two Super Bowls with the Giants. But defense was a problem again last season, when the Giants blew a fourth-quarter lead six times.

"I'm not bitter," Coughlin said. "We know we aren't winning a Super Bowl without a good defense. It didn't happen then and now it is."

The Giants promoted offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo to head coach and he retained 12 members of the coaching staff Coughlin assembled.

Coughlin was in the running to be a head coach with the San Franciso 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles but he removed himself from consideration.

He was at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis in February and said staying closely connected to the game remains a priority.

"There's always a plan, but how in fact it all comes together takes more than one party," Coughlin said earlier this month in an ESPN radio interview. "I would like to stay very close to the game in some capacity. All this time, I've been judging my own emotions, my own feelings.

"I've been a head coach in this league for some 21 years, 22 years. I think I've amassed some ability to help an organization, and I certainly would like to be able to do that."

During Coughlin's farewell press conference, John Mara said the Giants would have a role for Coughlin if he wanted it.

But even then, Coughlin was noncommittal and refused to shake hands with Mara when Coughlin left the podium.

"What's next for this guy Coughlin? I don't exactly know. I know we will dedicate time to the Jay Fund foundation," Coughlin said in January. "We are there to help families of children who have cancer."
