The Toronto Blue Jays claimed catcher/first baseman Jesus Montero off waivers Monday from the Seattle Mariners.

To clear a spot on the Toronto roster, catcher A.J. Jimenez was designated for assignment.

Montero, 26, appeared in 38 games with the Mariners last season, hitting .223 with five home runs and 19 RBIs.

Montero was acquired by Seattle from the New York Yankees on Jan. 20, 2012. He has appeared in 226 major league games, batting .253 with 28 homers and 104 RBIs.

The Mariners also optioned left-hander James Paxton, infielder Chris Taylor and outfielder Stefen Romero to Triple-A Tacoma.
