Busy Arizona Cardinals bolster o-line with Evan Mathis

By The Sports Xchange

The Arizona Cardinals continued their aggressive approach of adding proven veterans by agreeing to terms on a one-year contract with guard Evan Mathis.

The move came one day after the Cardinals shipped guard Jonathan Cooper to the New England Patriots in exchange for defensive end Chandler Jones.

Mathis came away with a Super Bowl ring from his lone season with the Denver Broncos in 2015. After being released by the Philadelphia Eagles last offseason, Mathis signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Broncos that included a $1 million signing bonus and a $421,875 million roster bonus.

Mathis, 34, started 12 of 16 regular-season games at left guard and was hampered by a late-season ankle injury. But he got healthy for the playoff run and started all three postseason contests, including Super Bowl 50.

With Mike Iupati at left guard, Mathis could push Earl Watford on the right side for Arizona. Guard/center Ted Larsen is the only other experienced interior lineman on the roster.

The 33-year-old Mathis was named first-team All-Pro in 2013 and chosen for the Pro Bowl each of his final two seasons with the Eagles.

The Carolina Panthers picked Mathis in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft and he remained there through the 2007 season before going to Miami in 2008 and on to Cincinnati from 2008-10 until he landed with the Eagles.
