With Matt Hasselbeck's retirement, the Indianapolis Colts needed a backup for quarterback Andrew Luck, and they signed unrestricted free agent quarterback Scott Tolzien, the team announced Friday.

"We looked at a number of quarterbacks during this process and we felt Scott fit us on a number of levels," said Colts general manager Ryan Grigson in a statement. "He is a young, highly intelligent, tough and driven individual who we feel possesses a lot of potential."

Tolzien spent the last three seasons with the Green Bay Packers. He has played in six career NFL games, including two starts, and completed 56 of 91 passes for 721 yards with one touchdown and five interceptions.

In 2015, Tolzien served as the backup to Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Tolzien played in three games for the Packers last season and completed the only pass he threw.
