Former Rutgers player Eddie Jordan returned three years ago to the school in an attempt to restore credibility to the program, but his mission came to an end Thursday.

Jordan was fired one day after the Scarlet Knights' season concluded with a loss to Nebraska in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis.

Rutgers finished a 7-25 record in 2015-16, going 0-14 on the road and winning only one of 18 conference games, beating Minnesota on the final day of the regular season. That win ended a school-record 17-game skid and a 32-game losing streak in Big Ten play.

The 61-year-old Jordan finished with a 29-68 overall record in three seasons and a 3-35 conference mark in the two years since the Scarlet Knights began play in the Big Ten. He was hired by the university in the wake of the firing of former coach Mike Rice and athletic director Tim Pernetti.

Jordan, who had a five-year contract, will be owed $2 million for the final two years.

Jordan played point guard on the Rutgers team that reached the Final Four in 1976. He also worked as an NBA coach for three teams.

Among the potential candidates to replace Jordan are Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley and Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard.
