Former Denver Broncos running back Montee Ball was arrested on Friday morning after allegedly battering his 20-year-old girlfriend.

The former Wisconsin star was charged with substantial battery after police responded to the incident at a hotel in Madison, Wis.

Officers arrived at the downtown hotel around 3:45 a.m. and found a woman who had a cut on her leg, stemming from Ball tossing her into a table, police said.

"The woman told police she had a dispute with her boyfriend," police spokesman Joel DeSpain said. "She said he put his hands on her, picked her up and threw her."

Ball was cooperative and told police he had pushed the woman. He was arrested and taken to Dane County Jail in Madison.

The cut was deep enough that the women required stitches.

Ball, 25, was cut by the Broncos in September after being a disappointment in two seasons with the team. He rushed for 731 yards and five touchdowns before being released.

Ball signed with the New England Patriots' practice squad in December but was not signed to a future contract when the season ended after the AFC Championship Game loss to his former team.

Ball was a second-round draft pick in 2013 but eventually dropped to fourth on the Broncos' depth chart as unheralded C.J. Anderson became the starting running back in 2014. He also was passed up by Ronnie Hillman, who became a prized reserve in 2014 and will start Sunday's Super Bowl against the Carolina Panthers.

Ball was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2011 when he was starring for the Badgers.
