Former University of Miami head coach Al Golden was hired by the Detroit Lions to be their tight ends coach, the team announced Monday night.
Golden, 46, led the Hurricanes to a 32-25 record over 4 1/2 seasons. He was let go when the team was 4-3 in October following a 58-0 loss to Clemson, Miami's worst-ever defeat.
The Hurricanes made bowl games twice in his tenure, following the 2013 and 2014 seasons.
Golden has no previous NFL coaching experience. After an NFL playing career that consisted of one year (1992) as a tight end with the New England Patriots, Golden became a graduate assistant at the University of Virginia.
He went on to coach linebackers at Boston College (1997-99) and Penn State (2000) before returning to Charlottesville, Va., to serve as defensive coordinator from 2001-05.
Golden was Temple's head coach from 2006-10. In his first season, the Owls went 1-11, but in his last two years, they went 9-4 (losing a bowl game) and 8-4.
He then made the move to Miami for the 2011 season.
The hiring of Golden comes a day after the Lions added former Maryland and Connecticut head coach Randy Edsall to serve as a special projects assistant to the front office.
