Jason Dufner leads CareerBuilder Challenge by one stroke

Jason Dufner moved to the top of the leaderboard at the CareerBuilder Challenge after firing a 7-under-par 65 in the second round on Friday at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif.

Dufner was at 15-under 129 after 36 holes in the PGA Tour event and had a one-shot lead over Jamie Lovemark, who shot a 65 on the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course.

Dufner started the round with a 6-under 30 on the front nine of the Stadium Course, which is being used in the tournament for the first time since 1987, and bogeyed No. 10 before recovering with birdies on two of the next three holes. His score matched the best on the Stadium Course during the first two days.

"It's a difficult golf course," Dufner said. "There's a little bit of room to play off the tee, but if you get off the path a little bit, you can get into some trouble. ... It's definitely the most difficult of the courses we have played here."

Lovemark holed a shot from 105 yards for an eagle on the par-4 No. 1, which started his back nine. His round also included six birdies and a bogey.

"Got a little tired coming down the stretch," Lovemark said. "There's some long rounds out here."

Defending champion Bill Haas, a two-time winner of the event, was among a group at 12 under along with Adam Hadwin of Canada, Jason Gore, Andrew Loupe and Anirban Lahiri of India.

Gore shot an 8-under 64, Haas posted a 66 and Lahiri, a first-round co-leader, had a 68 on the Tournament Course. Hadwin carded a 66 on the La Quinta Course.

Phil Mickelson was tied for eighth at 11 under after a 65 on the Tournament Course. The large group at 133 with Mickelson included Angel Cabrera, Michael Thompson, Brian Harman, Brendan Steele, Ryan Palmer and John Huh, who had an 8-under 64 on the Tournament Course.

Mickelson won the event in 2002 and 2004.

"I'm probably a week away, if I'm being honest," Mickelson said. "But I've also won with a lot less game than I have right now."

Jerry Kelly, who held a share of the first-round lead, was at 10 under after a 2-under 70 on the Tournament Course.

Many of the top players in the world rankings are absent this week from the PGA Tour event to play in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the European Tour.
