New England Patriots DE Chandler Jones reacted to legal substance

A reaction to a substance on Sunday morning was the cause of a medical emergency that landed New England Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones in the hospital after a visit to the Foxborough, Mass., Police Department.

The Boston Globe reported Wednesday that Jones used synthetic marijuana, which is not illegal in Massachusetts, before walking to the nearby police station for help. He was transported to Norwood Hospital but later discharged and was at the Patriots' practice facility the next morning at 6:30 p.m. ET for weight training.

The NFL is aware of the situation and is reviewing the matter. According to Massachusetts law, synthetic marijuana is a Class D drug in the same group as phenobarbitol, a prescription medication.

"Chandler Jones was admitted to the hospital on Sunday and released that day. He reported to work on time Monday morning and has participated in all meetings and practices since then," the Patriots said Tuesday in a statement.

According to The Globe, Jones, 25, did not overdose on pills, as a WEEI radio report in Boston previously indicated.

Jones led the Patriots during the regular season in sacks with 12 1/2, had 44 tackles and four forced fumbles and was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time.

The Patriots are preparing for an AFC divisional playoff game on Sunday at home against the Kansas City Chiefs.
