Seattle Mariners deal with Los Angeles Dodgers for RHP Joe Wieland

The Seattle Mariners acquired right-hander Joe Wieland from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for minor league infielder Erick Mejia on Tuesday.

The Mariners made room on their 40-man roster for Wieland by designating right-hander A.J. Schugel for assignment.

The 25-year-old Wieland was 10-5 with a 4.59 ERA in 22 games, including 21 starts, for Triple-A Oklahoma last season. He also started two games for the Dodgers and was 0-1 with an 8.31 ERA and four strikeouts.

In three seasons in the major leagues with the San Diego Padres and Dodgers, Wieland has a 1-5 record with a 5.85 ERA in 11 outings, including nine starts.

Mejia, 21, spent most of last season with Class A Everett and also played for Class A Clinton, the Rookie League Mariners team and Triple-A Tacoma. His combined batting average was .282 with 16 RBIs and 20 stolen bases in 51 games.

Schugel, 26, pitched his first game in the major leagues against the Diamondbacks last year and finished with five strikeouts in five relief appearances for a 5.00 ERA. He also split time in the minors with Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno, posting a combined 9-9 record with a 4.84 ERA.
