San Diego Chargers extend Mike McCoy through 2017

The San Diego Chargers extended the contract of coach Mike McCoy for one season through the 2017 campaign, the club announced Friday.

McCoy suffered through a 4-12 campaign in his third season at the helm and there was speculation he might not be retained. The Chargers lost 10 of their final 12 games and went 0-6 against their AFC West rivals.

But that didn't deter general manager Tom Telesco, who remembered the 9-7 records in each of McCoy's first two seasons. McCoy is 26-22 overall with the Chargers.

"We have a belief in Mike and a confidence in him," Telesco said at a press conference. "Part of that is the extension. If you want to be a stable, winning organization in this league, you have to weather a couple storms. And obviously this year was a big storm but I think we had to look at it in terms of big picture rather than this year.

"We had to look at it over three years, and Mike took us to a winning record two years in a row. Eighteen wins over two years. He took us to the playoffs and won a road playoff game, which is difficult in this league.

"We know we're disappointed in this year but Mike is someone we want to build around, so we thought that was important to get that done."

The Chargers feel they can enjoy a bounce-back season in 2016 as nine of their losses were by eight or fewer points.

McCoy also oversaw a housecleaning after the season as six coaches were fired, including offensive coordinator Frank Reich.

San Diego has missed the playoffs in five of the past six seasons.

There also is uncertainty over where the team will play its games in the future as team owner Dean Spanos is lobbying to move the team to Los Angeles. NFL owners are expected to vote on relocation next week.
