Jordan Spieth shoots 64, leads by four

Two-time major winner Jordan Spieth fired an 9-under-par 64 on Friday and opened a four-shot lead over three players after two rounds of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions event in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Spieth, the world's top-ranked player, posted the low round of the day on the par-73, 7,411-yard Plantation Course at Kapalua after finishing with a birdie on the 18th hole.

The 2015 Masters and U.S. Open winner was at 16-under 130 after 36 holes in the PGA Tour's first event of 2016 iin a field composed of players who won tournaments last year. He was one stroke off the record at the halfway point set by Ernie Els in 2003.

"Did I see 16 under? Probably not to start the season," Spieth said.

Tied at 12 under were Kevin Kisner, Fabian Gomez of Argentina and first-round leader Patrick Reed. Kisner nearly matched Spieth for low round of the day with a 65. Gomez posted a 66 that featured seven birdies and Reed finished with a 69 after opening with a 65 on Thursday in the first round.

Danny Lee of New Zealand was next at 11 under after a second-round 68. Rickie Fowler and Steven Bowditch of Australia were tied at 10 under after both shot 67s.

The highlight of Spieth's round was a chip-in from 36 feet for an eagle-3 at the par-5 ninth hole and the capper was a 64-yard approach to inside 5 feet and making a birdie putt on No. 18. The 22-year-old had three birdies on the front nine and four on the back.

Kisner also had an eagle, draining a 28-foot putt on the par-5 fifth hole, and six birdies.

"First tournament of the year, kind of rusty, haven't played in a while," Kisner said. "Seeing where my game is, I'm looking forward to having a chance on the weekend."
