Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg announced after Saturday's 24-17 loss to Georgia in the TaxSlayer Bowl that he plans to declare for this year's NFL Draft.

Hackenberg, a junior, said the decision to leave college a year early was not easy.

"It was tough," he said. "You've invested so much into a place and invested so much into fixing things and making sure it's where it needs to be."

Hackenberg, who is 6-foot-4 and 228 pounds, was at one time considered a potential top draft choice. He is the No. 5-ranked quarterback prospect, according to NFLDraftScout.com.

In three seasons, Hackenberg threw for 8,457 yards with 48 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. He was sacked 82 times in the past two years. The Nittany Lions ended this season 7-6.

Hackenberg left Saturday's game in the first half with a right shoulder sprain but the injury is not believed to be serious.

The injury to Hackenberg's throwing arm occurred in the second quarter. He appeared to get hurt after taking a hit but stayed in the game a little longer before exiting. He went 8 for 14 for 139 yards with an interception.
