Former Boston Red Sox third baseman Frank Malzone died of natural causes at his Needham, Mass., home, the team said Tuesday. He was 85.
A six-time All-Star and a member of the Red Sox hall of fame since 1995, Malzone played for Boston from 1955 to 1965 and was considered one of the team's best hitters in history.
During his 11-year run with the Red Sox, Malzone belted more home runs (131) and had more RBIs (716) than any third baseman in franchise history. He completed his playing career with the California Angels in 1966.
Malzone returned to the Red Sox after he finishing playing and worked for the team as a scout, instructor and in the front office.
