Top 25 Roundup: No. 1 Michigan State prevails in OT

Bryn Forbes scored a career-high 32 points and No. 1 Michigan State rallied from a 15-point deficit to defeat in-state rival Oakland in overtime on Tuesday at The Palace of Auburn Hills (Mich.)

Eron Harris supplied 27 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Spartans (13-0), who clinched the best start in school history.

Michigan State was playing its first game without National Player of the Year candidate Denzel Valentine. The senior combo guard underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Monday and will miss two to three weeks.

Junior point guard Kahlil Felder, who entered the game second in Division I in scoring and first in assists, had 37 points and nine assists for the Golden Grizzlies (7-4) before fouling out in the final minute of overtime.

No. 2 Kansas 70, San Diego State 57

Perry Ellis scored 20 points and Frank Mason added 12 as the Jayhawks won their ninth consecutive game, clubbing the Aztecs in San Diego.

Kansas (10-1) avenged a 61-57 loss to San Diego State in January 2015 that ended a 68-game home-court win streak for Kansas against nonconference opponents.

Zylan Cheatham scored 12 points and freshman guard Jeremy Hemsley added 10 to lead San Diego State (7-6).

No. 3 Oklahoma 88, Washington State 60

Buddy Hield scored 25 points, leading No. 3 Oklahoma over Washington State in the first round of the Diamond Head Classic at Honolulu.

The Sooners got 13 points from Isaiah Cousins, 11 from Dante Buford and 10 from Jordan Woodard.

Ike Iroegbu scored a team-high 16 points for the Cougars. Josh Hawkinson added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

No. 5 Virginia 63, California 62 (OT)

London Perrantes' three-pointer with 10 seconds to play in overtime lifted the host Cavaliers past the Golden Bears in Charlottesville, Va.

Virginia (10-1) took its first lead with 1:01 to play in regulation as guard Darius Thompson sailed in for a dunk after a Cavaliers steal. California freshman forward Jaylen Brown made two free throws with 42 seconds left to force overtime.

Forward Anthony Gill led Virginia with 17 points while guard Malcolm Brogdon put in 10 points which included a crucial three-pointer late in overtime.

Brown scored 18 points for California (9-3).

No. 6 Xavier 78, Wake Forest 70

Edmond Sumner scored 21 points and Trevon Bluiett added 17 as the visiting Musketeers overcame a big first-half deficit to defeat the Demon Deacons in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Xavier (12-0), which holds the highest ranking in program history, are off to the best start in school annals, used a 12-0 run spanning the two halves to pull back into the game. The Musketeers went ahead for the first time at 49-47 with less than 14 minutes left.

Bryant Crawford's 16 points and John Collins' 11 points led Wake Forest (8-3), which had a five-game winning streak end.

No. 8 Arizona 85, Long Beach State 70

Freshman guard Allonzo Trier scored 20 points and the host Wildcats rode their hot free throw shooting to beat the 49ers in Tucson, Ariz.

Trier had his third 20-point outing, hitting 3 of 5 shots from behind the arc. He hit his stride in this five-game homestand, averaging 17.6 points in that stretch.

Wildcats forward Ryan Anderson posted his third consecutive double-double and sixth of the season with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Six Wildcats scored in double figures.

Arizona (12-1) won its national-best 47th consecutive home game after shooting 87.5 percent from the free-throw line.

Guard Nick Faust scored 17 points to lead Long Beach State (6-8).

No. 9 Butler 88, Southern Utah 52

Roosevelt Jones, the reigning Big East Player of the Week, recorded 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Bulldogs cruised past the Thunderbirds in Indianapolis.

Tyler Lewis recorded nine points along with eight assists, Tyler Wideman scored 15 points, Kelan Martin added 12 and Andrew Chrabascz 11 for Butler (10-1), which led 48-28 at halftime.

Southern Utah (3-8) was paced by 17 points from guard Travon Langston.

No. 11 Iowa State 91, No. 22 Cincinnati 79

Abdel Nader drilled a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left as the Cyclones outlasted the No. 22 Bearcats in Cincinnati.

Georges Niang and Monte Morris scored 24 and 16 points, respectively, Iowa State (10-1), which fell to Northern Iowa by the same score Saturday.

Troy Caupain scored 18 points and Jacob Evans added 14 off the bench for Cincinnati (10-2), which missed two 3-point attempts in the final seconds.

No. 13 Miami 95, La Salle 49

Ivan Cruz Uceda scored a career-high 20 points as the visiting Hurricanes dominated the Explorers from start to finish at the Palestra in Philadelphia.

Cruz Uceda drilled four of his five 3-point attempts and all three of his tries from inside the arc as Miami (10-1) closed out the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule with their fifth straight victory.

La Salle (4-5) suffered the largest loss in school history in losing their fourth consecutive game.

No. 14 Purdue 68, Vanderbilt 55

Center A.J. Hammons had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and the Boilermakers bounced back from Saturday's loss to No. 9 Butler with a victory over the Commodores in West Lafayette, Ind.

Guard Rapheal Davis scored 14 and freshman forward Caleb Swanigan added 13 points and eight rebounds as Purdue (12-1) extended its Mackey Arena winning streak to 15 games.

Wade Baldwin had 13 points and Jeff Roberson scored 12 for Vanderbilt (7-4), which is coached by former Purdue guard and assistant coach Kevin Stallings, who was a member of the Boilermakers' 1980 Final Four team - the last time Purdue has advance that far in the NCAA Tournament.

No. 16 Louisville 75, UMKC 47

Trey Lewis scored 17 points and the No. 16 Cardinals smothered the Kangaroos in Louisville, Ky.

Louisville (10-1) forced UMKC into 19 turnovers and cruised to their fifth straight victory. The Kangaroos (7-5) shot 29.8 percent from the floor.

Damion Lee had three steals to go along with 14 points, and Jaylen Johnson and guard Donovan Mitchell came off the bench to each score 10 for the Cardinals. Center Chinanu Onuaku added 10 points and nine rebounds.

No. 17 Villanova 78, Delaware 48

Josh Hart recorded 18 points and a career-high 14 rebounds as the host Wildcats shook off an early double-digit deficit to roll past the Blue Hens in Villanova, Pa.

Jalen Brunson added 13 and Ryan Arcidiacono 11 for the Wildcats (9-2).

Kory Holden finished with 23 points on 8 for 16 shooting for the Blue Hens (5-5), who led 12-2 after three straight 3-pointers by Holden.

No. 18 SMU 90, Kent State 74

Nic Moore compiled 25 points, eight assists and four steals to help the No. 18 Mustangs defeat the Golden Flashes in the semifinals of the Las Vegas Classic.

Keith Frazier came off the bench to post 19 points and 10 rebounds for SMU (10-0). Senior forward Jordan Tolbert had 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Mustangs coach Larry Brown was back after serving a nine-game NCAA suspension to start the season.

Freshman guard Jaylin Walker scored 20 points to lead Kent State (7-3). Junior forward Jimmy Hall had 13 points.

DePaul 82, No. 20 George Washington 61

For the first time in eight seasons, the Wildcats knocked off a ranked team at home as they defeated the Colonials in Chicago.

DePaul (6-6) raced out to a 10-0 lead in the opening 2 minutes, 16 seconds, and never let George Washington get closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Billy Garrett Jr. paced a balanced attack with 20 points and seven assists as the Wildcats defeated a ranked team at home for the first time since topping No. 17 Villanova on Jan. 3, 2008.

The Colonials (10-2), playing their second game on an opponent's home court this season, lost top scorer Tyler Cavanaugh early in the second half to a left ankle injury. The junior posted 14 points in 19 minutes.

No. 24 Utah 105, Delaware State 58

Kyle Kuzma scored 15 points and forward Jordan Loveridge added 14 points to lead the No. 24 Utes past the winless Hornets in Salt Lake City.

Lorenzo Bonam and Chris Reyes added 12 points apiece for Utah, which improved to 6-0 all-time versus teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Utes (10-2) also won their 27th consecutive non-conference home game.

Guard Devin Morgan Jr. scored 14 points to lead Delaware State. The Hornets (0-12) are one of only three Division I teams without a victory this season.

No. 25 South Carolina 75, St. John's 61

Duane Notice scored 20 points to lead the Gamecocks past the Red Storm in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Shootout at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Michael Carrera added 16 points and 13 rebounds for South Carolina (11-0), which is enjoying its best start since opening 17-0 in 1933-34.

The Gamecocks remain the only undefeated SEC team and are ranked in the AP Top 25 poll for the first time since 2003-04, when they finished at No. 23.

Durand Johnson, a graduate swingman, had 16 points and freshman guard Federico Mussini scored 12 on 5 of 14 shooting for St. John's (7-6), which has dropped three straight since beating Syracuse and six of 10.
