Carolina Panthers CB Josh Norman to be fined for scuffles

By The Sports Xchange

Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman reportedly will be fined a combined $26,044 after a series of physical confrontations with New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. last Sunday

Norman was fined $8,681 for a face-mask incident and $17,363 for striking Beckham in the head and neck area, according to Jarrett Bell of USA Today Sports.

The NFL will officially announce the fines on Friday and Norman said he would appeal his fines.

The competitive banter between Beckham and Norman escalated to the point of multiple physical confrontations.

Norman was called for two personal foul penalties in the Panthers' 38-35 win. Beckham was called for three, including an intentional helmet-to-helmet shot at Norman, and was suspended for one game.

Beckham's appeal was being heard Wednesday by James Thrash, a former NFL wide receiver in his first year working with the league.

Norman was on ESPN's "Mike & Mike" radio show on Wednesday.

"The crazy part about all the unsportsmanlike conducts, I was just trying to be myself at the end of the day," Norman said. "I know one of those plays, I was in Cover 2, I was just jamming the man inside of the play and I got a personal foul called against me. And that was in the confines of the play, within the whistle.

"That wasn't after the whistle, that was within the whistle. ... They're probably going to send me something about that ... but I'm going to appeal it, and I'm going to get my justified case about the whole situation.

"I just pretty much showed people what this guy (Beckham) really is and what he stands for. I just don't feel like that's a part of the game that should be played. If you want to play, let's play it straight up, let's do it the right way."

NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino said Tuesday he believes both Beckham and Norman should have been ejected from Sunday's game.

"The crew was doing a really tough job of trying to keep the game under control," Blandino said on NFL Network. "They had spoken to both head coaches. They had spoken to the players. There was a point during the game when I did get on the headset to the replay official to remind the referee that, 'You can eject players. You'll have our full support. This thing cannot get out of control.'"

After reviewing the game, Blandino said: "The officials, if you ask them, they would agree after looking at the tape that ejections were warranted."
