The Oakland A's signed free-agent right-handed pitcher Henderson Alvarez to a one-year, $4.25 million contract, multiple media outlets reported Friday. Alvarez, 26, could make an additional $1.6 million if he satisfies all of the incentive clauses.
The A's have not yet announced the deal, but Alvarez posted on Instagram that he is joining the A's.
The A's are taking a bit of a chance with Alvarez, who went 0-4 with a 6.45 ERA in 2015 before going on the disabled list in July after shoulder surgery. He also suffered a partially torn UCL in his right elbow.
Alvarez probably will not be ready at the start of the 2016 season, but he could be back by midseason. He is under A's control through the 2017 season as well.
Alvarez was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2014, going 12-7 with a 2.65 ERA.
Oakland's rotation consists of ace Sonny Gray and left-hander Rich Hill, who signed with the A's in November. Beyond that are a number of pitchers who are coming off injuries.
