The switch-hitting Cabrera is a two-time All-Star and last season, in his only season with Tampa Bay, batted .265 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs. Cabrera also played for Cleveland and Washington and is a .267 career hitter.
Cabrera can also play second and third base and the Mets signed him while Ruben Tejada and Wilmer Flores are recovering from leg injuries.
Tejada missed the rest of the playoffs after breaking his leg on a controversial takeout slide by Los Angeles second baseman Chase Utley in Game 2 of the National League Division Series. Flores, who nearly was traded to Milwaukee for center fielder Carlos Gomez in July, fractured his ankle playing winter ball in Venezuela on Nov. 26.
