Men's Top 25 roundup: GW upsets Virginia

Guard Patricio Garino and forward Tyler Cavanaugh each had 18 points and five rebounds as George Washington shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and upset No. 6 Virginia 73-68 Monday before a sellout crowd of 5,025 in Washington.

Cavanaugh, a transfer from Wake Forest, gave the Colonials a 64-55 with two free throws at the 5:24 mark.

After the Cavaliers (1-1) trimmed the lead to 64-58, forward Yuta Watanabe made a basket to build the margin back up to nine at 68-59 with 4:16 remaining and the Colonials (2-0) held on to post their biggest home win in nearly 20 years.

Guard Malcolm Brogdon had 28 points and eight rebounds for the Cavaliers, who had won their last 15 nonconference games and allowed just 51.5 points per contest last season.

No. 7 Iowa State 106, Chicago State 64

Chicago State had no answer for Iowa State's Jameel McKay and as a result had no chance as the Cyclones ran away with a 106-64 win on Monday at Ames, Iowa.

McKay was the Iowa State offense early. He finished with a career-high 25 points on 12-of-15 shooting, and most of his attempts were in close range. The senior forward finished with nine dunks and 11 rebounds as he recorded his sixth career double-double.

Elliott Cole scored 18 points to lead the Cougars (1-1).

No. 12 Arizona 90, Bradley 60

Freshman Allonzo Trier made all 14 of his free-throw attempts while scoring 22 points as the Wildcats pulled away from the Braves in Tucson, Ariz.

Trier, a McDonald's High School All-American, hit four of five shots from the field, and his 14-of-14 performance from the line tied for the second-best effort in school history. Jerryd Bayless went 16-for-16 against Stanford in 2008.

Arizona (2-0) got 15 points from Ryan Anderson. Ronnie Suggs scored 17 points to pace Bradley (1-1).

No. 14 Indiana 102, Austin Peay 76

The Hoosiers hit 15 shots in a row in a span of more than 12 minutes in the second half, and they raced to a victory over the Governors in an opening-round game of the Maui Jim Maui Classic played at Assembly Hall.

Indiana (2-0) was particularly proficient from beyond the 3-point arc, making 16 of 27 attempts. That was two 3-pointers off of the school record set against Minnesota last season.

Senior Yogi Ferrell led the Hoosiers with 22 points, and James Blackmon Jr. had 20. Chris Horton led Austin Peay (0-2) with 17 points, and Khalil Davis scored 16.

No. 15 Cal 85, UC Santa Barbara 67

Tyrone Wallace scored 24 points to lead the Bears past the Gauchos in Berkeley, Calif.

All five starters scored in double figures for Cal (2-0). Freshman Jaylen Brown had 17 points and seven rebounds.

Guard Michael Bryson scored 23 points for UC Santa Barbara (1-1).

No. 16 Utah 81, San Diego State 76

Jordan Loveridge scored 21 points, and Jakob Poeltl added 15 points and 12 rebounds to help the Utes escape with an victory over the Aztecs in Salt Lake City.

Kyle Kuzma added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Lorenzo Bonam chipped in 14 points for the Utes. Utah (2-0) snapped a six game losing streak to San Diego State dating back to 2009.

Winston Shepard scored 19 points, and Trey Kell and Dakarai Allen added 15 points apiece for San Diego State. The Aztecs (1-1) shot 41.9 percent from the field and 8-for-17 from 3-point range.

No. 17 Vanderbilt 98, Gardner-Webb 62

The Commodores ran off a 19-0 spurt early in the first half, then scored 16 straight early in the second and cruised to a victory over the Bulldogs at Memorial Gymnasium.

Led by Jeff Roberson's career-high 18 points, Vanderbilt (2-0) ran away from Gardner-Webb (0-2).

Tyrell Nelson led Gardner-Webb with 16 points.

No. 25 Oregon 74, No. 20 Baylor 67

Senior Chris Boucher scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds Monday, leading the Ducks to a win over the Bears in a nonconference game at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Ore.

Elgin Cook and Dwayne Benjamin had 15 and 13 points, respectively, for the Ducks. Freshman Tyler Dorsey added 12 points, and Dillon Brooks had 10 for Oregon (2-0).

Al Freeman had 22 points to pace Baylor (1-1), while Johnathan Motley added 17. Taurean Prince scored 10.

No. 23 LSU 91, Kennesaw State 69

Freshman Ben Simmons powered his way to 22 points, and Josh Gray made an efficient return from a one-game suspension to pace the Tigers to a rout of the Owls in Baton Rouge, La.

Simmons, who took just seven shots in LSU's season-opening win against McNeese State, made seven in the first half, keying a 30-8 run that sent the Tigers (2-0) into the locker room with a 44-21 lead.

Kennesaw State (0-2) got a game-high 25 points from Kendrick Ray.

No. 24 Michigan 88, Elon 68

Derrick Walton Jr. recorded 24 points, seven assists and six rebounds as the Wolverines scored the first 10 points of the second half and rolled to a victory over the Phoenix in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Michigan (2-0) took a 43-33 lead to halftime after Duncan Robinson came off the bench to score 13 of his 19 points. He was 6-for-6 from the field in the game.

Reserve Dainan Swoope led Elon (1-1) with 15 points.
