PITTSBURGH -- St. Louis Cardinals rookie left fielder Stephen Piscotty was carted off the field on a stretcher in the top of the seventh inning of Monday night's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates after colliding with center fielder Peter Bourjos.

The initial diagnosis was a head contusion and he was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Bourjos caught a long fly ball to the left-center field gap hit by Pirates third baseman Josh Harrison. Bourjos' right knee then banged into Piscotty's head.

Piscotty started the game in right field then shifted to left at the start of the seventh in a series of moves made by manager Mike Mathney with the game scoreless.

Jon Jay replaced Piscotty in left field.

Piscotty is hitting .310 with seven home runs and 39 RBIs in 62 games.
