Another Texas high school football player hits referee

By Alex Butler

SAN ANTONIO, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- A disturbing trend is taking hold in one Texas city. For the second consecutive week people will be talking about a San Antonio high school student hitting a referee on a football field.

Although this incident wasn't as gruesome as the one a week ago, when two players torpedoed themselves into a defenseless referee, it did result in the player being ejected.

St. Anthony High School was facing Austin Hyde Park Saturday when Zeke Cardenas responded badly to a penalty flag. The St. Anthony senior went up to an official and shoved him before being restrained by his teammates. He was immediately ejected from the game.

The incident came just eight days after two players from John Jay High School hit a referee.

Hyde Park coach Dean Campbell was not at the game, but responded in an interview with the San Antonio Express-News.

"Whatever happened was unfortunate, especially with whatever happened last week in Marble Falls," Campbell told the Express-News. "I spoke with the coaches after the game and I didn't really ask them what all they saw."
